Igor Savchenko is a pivotal figure in Belarusian conceptual art. His works are held in over twenty museum and private collections worldwide, including the State Russian Museum, the ROSPHOTO State Museum and Exhibition Center, the Hasselblad Collection, Fotomuseum Winterthur (Switzerland), and Moderna Museet (Sweden), among others.
Savchenko’s artistic trajectory is paradoxical. In 1997, he publicly renounced traditional photography, turning instead to textual, audiovisual, and theoretical projects ("photographs made without a camera"), only to return to the image years later on new, metaphysical grounds. His art has always been an exploration of time, memory, and the fragile boundary between image and reality—the resistance of a world that refuses to be captured in conventional ways.
In the project The Inner Venice, I address the moment when the artist pushes his practice to its ultimate threshold. We are bound by three decades of friendship and a shared artistic context, which allows me to approach this step from the very core of his personal mythology.
Savchenko transforms his own body into a total canvas by covering it with tattoos. These signs, symbols, and texts are neither mere decoration nor subcultural markers; they are programmatic manifestos. They have become a natural continuation of his long-standing investigation, in which the artist’s physical existence evolves into a living medium. Whereas Savchenko once explored the mechanics of memory through other people’s archives, old negatives, and "found photography," his own flesh now serves as the vessel for this archive.
The metaphor of The Inner Venice unfolds on a profound level. Venice is a city on water—a fragile mirage suspended between past and future, a labyrinth of canals and dead ends where reality endlessly doubles in its reflections. With the artist’s permission, I use archival materials and publish these photographs: in them, the lines of the tattoos traverse the plane of the frame, morphing into a map of mental space. The artist’s body becomes a site where biography and the traces of time fuse into a single document of an era. The contours of the drawings and the texture of the skin form a complex topography, where each inscription is a street leading deep into memory.
This gesture signifies the complete dissolution of boundaries between a person's private life and their total immersion in art. Having traveled from the classical mode of capture of the world to its purely mental models, Savchenko completes the final circle: he literally constructs his City from his own biography and mortal flesh. The Inner Venice becomes the material embodiment of his philosophy: a tangible world emerging on the skin as a monument to transient time.
